Cigar Box Guitar and Amp

Alright, so this is the Cigar Box Electric Guitar and Amplifier that I built for my Product Design class at Art Institute instructed by Michael Downes. The assignment was to build a piece of furniture out of recycled and/or repurposed materials and Michael was kind enough to let me deviate a bit, and instead of furniture make a musical instrument. Ryan Bjornstad helped me immensely on the construction end by providing tools, troubleshooting, and helping me physically craft the instrument.

I purchased my amp circuit from Velleman, and it is a 7-watt distorted beauty. The cigar boxes came from Riches. I purchased the machine heads (tuning pegs) from Portland Fretworks, who also gave me a great deal of guidance in this project. They directed me to Gilmer's Exotic Woods where I also received quite a bit of guidance. The gentleman from Gilmer's, I forget his name, hand picked the right piece of Indian Rosewood for the fretboard and chinese mahogany for the neck. Also it should be mentioned that I also got quite a bit of help from the salesman at Do-It-Best Hardware on 40th & Fremont. Turns out everybody is a luthier here.

The pickup on the Guitar is a piezo disc from Radio Shack, which is the thing in your microwave that goes beep. I think it is funny that it is taped on with electric tape inside the box. For each item the bill of materials is no more than $35.

Click on the photos to enlarge. They were taken by Jessica Hecox at the Art Institute of Portland. With any luck one of these pictures will end up in the 07/08 catalog!
